Work Pattern: 3 days office-based / 2 days remote

About the RoleMonmouthshire County Council is seeking an experienced Assistant Team Manager to join its Early Help, Duty and Assessment Team within Children’s Services. This is a senior, frontline leadership role based within a fast-paced and supportive environment, including work within the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).
The Early Help and Assessment Team is the point of entry to statutory Children’s Services and plays a critical role in assessing risk and need where safeguarding and care concerns are paramount. You will be part of an established management team, supporting ongoing service development, improving risk management, and strengthening outcomes for children, young people, and families at points of crisis.

You will be part of an established management team, supporting ongoing service development, improving risk management, and strengthening outcomes for children, young people, and families at points of crisis.
What You’ll Do
- Provide management oversight and professional decision-making for Duty to Report forms and referrals into Children’s Services.
- Work closely with the EHAT management team and IAA workers to ensure timely and proportionate risk assessment.
- Supervise, mentor, and support social workers and IAA staff, ensuring high-quality practice, case progression, and timely decision-making.
- Chair and minute strategy discussion meetings when required, ensuring accurate and timely recording on the database.
- Support social workers to devise, implement, and review safeguarding plans to improve outcomes for children and families.
- Provide professional leadership through supervision, case audits, reviews, assisted fieldwork, and court attendance where necessary.
- Contribute to practice development, service improvement, and the promotion of high professional standards.
- Deputise for the Team Manager as required.
- Maintain high standards of record-keeping, data collection, and compliance with departmental policies.
- Ensure safe working practices and actively promote equality and diversity in line with Council policy.
What We’re Looking For
- A fully qualified and registered Social Worker with Social Care Wales registration.
- Proven experience working at Senior Social Worker / Assistant Team Manager level within a front-door / MASH / Duty & Assessment setting.
- Strong experience supervising social workers and IAA workers.
- In-depth knowledge of childcare legislation, safeguarding frameworks, and statutory guidance.
- Excellent leadership, decision-making, communication, and case management skills.
- Ability to work confidently in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment.
- Must live within one hour’s commute of County Hall, Usk (NP15 1GA).
Essential Requirements
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Enhanced DBS (Children’s Disclosure & Barring Service Check)
- Minimum 2 years’ references / work history
- Signed Confidentiality Agreement
