HGV Technician – Fleet Maintenance Specialist

Job Details:
  • Employment Type: Temporary (12 weeks, covering vacancy)
  • Start Date: 29/09/2025
  • Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Thursday 08:00–16:00, Friday 08:00–15:30)
  • Pay Rate: PAYE: £14.63 per hour | Umbrella: £18.61 per hour
  • Location: Newtown
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections, servicing, and MOT preparation for HGVs, LGVs, specialist vehicles, and plant equipment.
  • Perform fault diagnosis using specialist IT equipment, identify errors, and complete repairs with parts replacement.
  • Support the Fleet Operations Supervisor in delivering DVSA-compliant inspections and maintenance, following corporate policies and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records in the online Fleet Management system, including safety inspections, service sheets, and costings for repairs.
  • Road test vehicles (with appropriate licence) and apply craft skills for specialised work.
  • Participate in 'out of hours' standby rota during winter and bank holidays, providing assistance to other service areas.
  • Promote health and safety in workshops, mentor apprentices, and stay updated on HGV maintenance legislation (e.g., DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness).
  • Foster positive relationships with stakeholders, including highways staff and suppliers, to enhance service delivery.

Requirements:
  • Essential: Experience in heavy vehicle or heavy plant maintenance, including DVSA-standard inspections.
  • Essential: Knowledge of health and safety, mechanical systems, diagnostic equipment, and tools.
  • Essential: Accredited QCF Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in vehicle/heavy plant repair and maintenance, or current IRTEC Advanced Technician licence; or DVSA Nominated Tester status.
  • Essential: Full valid Category B driving licence; full Category C (HGV) licence or ability to attain within 2 years post-probation; commitment to further training.
  • Essential: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently or in a team, and efficiency under pressure.
  • Desirable: DVSA Nominated Tester qualification; IOSH Working Safely (or equivalent) health and safety certificate.
  • Must have: Eligibility to work in the UK, Driving Licence, CPC Driving Qualification; Confidentiality Agreement and Criminal Convictions Declaration required upon offer acceptance.
  • Other: Willingness to work variable patterns, including out-of-hours standby/call-outs, and travel across the county.
